Picked up my new Kona Jake today, i've only ever ridden a mountain bike so it seemed a bit strange going out on it this evening,i found that you dont realise how quick your going seems a lot slower than it actually is so i had to check the computer to make sure.Should the seat be slightly higher than the stem height or do i need to get some more spacers, i guess i'll get used to the different riding position with time,is there anything else i need to be keeping an eye on.

I've a Jake. Taken it on club rides with suitable tyres - it's not a slow bike at all. Also bomb proof and great to ride off road.

Enjoy and worry not.

The seat should be considerably higher than the bars. On my cross bike the saddle is 107 cm from the ground and the bars are 1 metre exactly. Younger fitter people run their bars relatively lower.

Mmmm. Not at all sure I agree. It's a cross bike - being aero is far from the be all and end all. Strong comfortable position is far more important, and you see them set all all sorts of ways at club level, where lots of people use MTBs for cross anyway.

Obviously at elite level it's all arse up and head down. But, you'll find a lot of people with big seat/bar differentials just seldom, if ever, use the drops.

That said, I have a fair drop, because I wanted the smaller frame size, and it's a fairly short head tube geometry.

On a cross bike if you're riding it off-road then you'll want the bars high. However, for most people the saddle always ends up higher than the bars.
