Good grief, hope he's ok and makes a swift recovery (and when he goes back to school, his scars are viewed as a badge of honour and not the reason for teasing, given that he has made the news).

As I read that I thought I'd heard something similar before, so I Googled "impaled on handlebars" and there's an amazing number of stories.

Must be why so many people ride with a helmet dangling on their bars

Yep, a very common occurrence and often fatal if it cores the femoral artery.
A woman in Exeter had an incredibly lucky escape a couple of years ago, she came off after hitting a pothole and the bar end went through her femoral artery...the car behind was being driven by a vascular surgeon, who managed to stem the bleeding before the ambulance arrived.

Hope the boy in the article makes a full recovery.

Do we actually know how he did it? The most likely situation is that he caught the front wheel on something and then went into the bars.

Hope he's okay though.

Eek, not a nice injury to have.

My late brother, when he was a toddler, decided to ride his tricycle down the stairs. He went through the window on the landing and got a circular scar on his head from the end of the handle bars. Could have been worse.

I had a case a while back, where I was on my mountain bike and decided to take the seat post out (to make it lighter).

Everything was going okay until I got to a road I needed to cross (I was on the path). I used the front brake, but applied it too hard. And I regret to say that the seat post hole went right between my legs. It hurt but I thought nothing of it so carried on.

When I got home, it was still hurting so I thought I would check it out. It just happens that it missed the fish finger and potatoes but about an inch, and hit my leg. I gave it a rinse out as it was bleeding and now I have a scar in the shape of the seat post hole.

I was cycling with a group of people when one of the children's foot slipped off the pedal and he ended up coming off and catching himself on his handlebars - luckily he only ended up with a circular scar on his tummy.

I hate seeing bikes with no plug in the end now ... especially as when I came off mine a couple of years ago I got a large bruise where mine hit me in the chest/shoulder and at least I did have the proper plugs in.

Ugh. I've heard of this before too.

There was a time when stem mounted shifters appeared, and those impaled significant numbers of people - nasty stuff.

Should there now be a separate forum for "Full Body Armour" threads?
