Billy Connolly's Big Send Off

What a wonderful show. I've enjoyed his stand-up and his travel shows very much over the years, but this is the best thing he's ever done. If you missed it try and catch it on whatever ITV calls their iPlayer. My granddad introduced me to him in about 1972 so my memories of both men are woven together.

I've met Billy twice. Once in London and once in LA. Both times he'd wandered into bicycle shops I was working in. He treated me like a twunt. He was such a rude and arrogant man. I think he has a thing about shop assistants. But I still love him. Forgiveness is a wonderful thing.

I've not yet seen the 'Send Off' programme but have seen Billy Connolly live on stage a couple of times. He has to be one of the most naturally gifted & funny comedians of all time IMHO.
Having not dealt with him personally, I can't venture a comment on his twuntness though.

I enjoyed the program and the various different ways that death is celebrated.

I've been a Billy Connelly fan since the late 70's when my cousins introduced me to him via taped recordings.

Met him once, when he was filling his Land Rover with fuel at a petrol station at Aberdeen airport. Can confirm he is a twunt when "off duty".
A common man from the shipyards who became rich and is now an aloof and pretentious twunt. Just like so many others who let money go to their heads. Twunts.
And I won't be watching whatever the OP was referring to , as that would be contributing to his twuntness. Even his accent annoys me now; a kind of poshed up (but still trying to sound common) dialect of Glaswegian. Not as bad as Sheena Easton though , who sounded Los Angelwegian 2 weeks after landing at "LAX".

Granted. But not as funny as he was in the 70s; his pre-twunt days .

I agree with you there. Have a few old LPs picked up at a car boot sale once and have never laughed as much in my entire life.

Connolly is an arse. Shortly before Kenneth Bigley was decapitated by the Islamist fanatics he even made a 'joke' about why they didn't just get on and do it, a few days later they did behead Mr Bigley and show it on video. Connolly has no place on stage or tv or anywhere in the public eye.

The context and meaning behind his comments about Bigley were mis-reported by journalists and other commentators who weren't in the audience. To quote another brilliant comedian, I know because I was there.

Personally I think he's one of the true greats of British comedy. I haven't seen much of his travel documentary stuff so I'll have to check it out as well as this Send Off show.

There are some who would laugh hysterically if Connolly was reading medieval cancer cures, comedy is like that, reach a certain point of fame and it is very hard to do wrong in the minds of certain fans. I have read the full transcript of the Bigley incident, and right up until when he was making the standard comment of the undefendable to reporters later (**** off) he comes across as what some above have described him as, a twunt.
Yours sincerely,

I do think his comedy is still good. That is quite something as he has been around for about 50 years now. He was years ahead with is (seeming) rambling comedy and observational stuff and is still a master of it now.

What I like in both his comedy and other shows is that he offers a perspective on things that we often have not seen and he can change our view on the subject and take us with him.

OK sometimes he is a bit way out and you can tell he has been off in celeb land for so long but I can look beyond that.

World is better for having him in it.
