Hi Nihal, it depends on the kind of bike really. On a mountain bike with knobbly tyres 8 miles is a respectable distance but jump on a road bike with skinny tyres and you could double that.

For you probably the most important part of training will be nutrition; plenty of proteins, fats and carbs.

yeah depends on the bike, only been riding again for a few months but on my cheapo road bike i can do the 8 mile journey home from work, up hill in about 40mins. and can ride around 25miles without killing my self off. youll get better very quickly if you ride alot

Sorry I've just noticed your post says road bike!

Well, depending on the terrain, for a beginner 12 miles would be good and 16 excellent. I can manage about 18 solo on a flat road with no wind but hills and wind will reduce my distance to 14.5 miles.

remember to get a good cadence, don just try to use the higher gears if your no up to it, you just get tired quicker,

You'll quickly improve. I've only been riding a month: on a mountain bike for a few weeks then a road bike for the last week. Started with 8 miles, then 12, then 15 and this week I did 22 to 25 miles every other day. Aiming for 30 on Monday. Oh, and I'm 41.

Im 25 and a pisshead and I can do 14 miles in about 45-50 mins (without stopping except for road crossing).. I guess thats about 18 miles in an hour average although I once genuinely clocked myself over the same ride at 19,9mph (not 20mph! dammit). I would put money on it that you are already far better than me but you dont know it. Just ride. Build up your distances gradually. If you got a mountain bike, then go mountain biking. Great for cardio and great for your legs!

8 miles in an hour may not be great, but at your age the speed and distance will improve dramatically by the time your 20 if you push yourself. You have just started so there is no "general distance to cover" and your legs arent fully adapted to hard cycling yet. I would suggest tho that you aim for a 12 mile ride and see how knackered you feel. If you still feel you have plenty of energy then push yourself another 2 or 3miles on your next ride.

Keep going out and adding a little each time but don't worry too much if you have bad days - we all do.

the main thing is that you are out there enjoying it rather than staying in with computer games just pretending you have fun

Enjoy it
