After no less than FOUR bike rides yesterday, I came back from an MTB ride and forgot to shut my garage door - leaving 5 or six bikes available to be taken. I live in a nice area but we still get break-ins all the time.

I would have been devastated to lose my road bike.

Lucky lucky lucky

Very lucky. I've once left the door unlocked.

We are getting a number of MTB thefts round the area. Nick Craig has had 4 bikes stolen, all top end Scotts, including an electric assist MTB that's as rare as hens teeth (his missus bike).

When you say "get break ins all the time" do you mean you personally or the area you live in?

In my village, in the neighboring roads. The criminals travel from London out to our area at night for easy pickings. I only know this as the "neighborhood watch" report on the crimes and any convictions that transpire via the Thames Valley Police reports. If you look at the culprits and where they travel from, its a real eye opener. We are just off the M4 so nice and easy for them.

And no, we've not been burgled personally where we are, but we were broken into in Reading one time - very very unpleasant.

Heh...My favourite one happened very early in the morning...Making my way to SW London for a very early start I suffered a p*nct*re when coming off of the Bow Flyover...So realising I can't fix the p*nct*re for some reason I leave the bike on the railings at Bow Road tube station.Come back to it nine hours later and realise I hadn't locked the bike up at all.

My wife/kids repeatedly leave ours open overnight. Sometimes my neighbours have closed it for me other times it stays open. The stuff in there is probably worth more than the house contents, but it does not seem to worry them. I usually just get a shrug of the shoulders when I come storming back into the house shouting at them. I am going to have to hide the blipper for the door soon.

For several days my next door neighbour had left a fatbike out side the front of their house, on the grass-without-a-fence that passes for a front garden. The other day I realised why it was safe from harm when I encountered Spiderman (aged about 4) and Batman (similar) carrying out their patrol* on scooters.

Carry on, citizen.

The b******ds broke thro my pitched, tiled roof......smashed thro the ceiling.....forced the electric door and nicked my bikes. Obviously targeted.
You were very fortunate.
PS
The ceiling is now reinforced and the door now has 2 internal locks....plus both bikes are locked to 20mm steel anchors with Gold standard padlocks.
As a final deterent I asked my wife to sleep in the garage.......I am still nursing my bits.

Blimey.

My garage door has 5 locks, but the bikes are anchored.

Guess which idiot left the lot unlocked for 2 hours this afternoon..... Fortunately most of the bikes are at the caravan, but two of my road bikes were still there, one attached to a turbo, the other anchored down. Idiot !!!!!

I was on an audax ride from Merthyr Leisure Center once. At the café stop one of the riders remembered his wallet, phone and car/house keys were sat in full view on the passenger seat of his unlocked car.

It was all still there amazingly.

I got distracted when I got back from a ride last week. I normally wheel my bike in and then lock the front door behind me, but on this occasion the phone was ringing and I forgot to lock up. Hours later one of my neighbours knocked and when I opened the door he was standing there with my keys in his hand!

I live in a terraced house with no front garden or yard on a moderately busy street so people are constantly walking past that door. I do have a spare key but it would have been a major pain if someone had walked off with the key.

I forgot to lock my back door once in my old house and some b*st*rd thief obviously tried the door during the night. I woke up the next morning to find that my wallet had gone from the kitchen.
