Hi Guys,
This is my first post so I hope it's in the right place..
After a long time riding an old Peugeot touring bike and then a very cheap full suspension mountain bike I have decided the time has come to start commuting to work, and I'm looking for a more serious bike to for the job - My mountain bike isn't up to it, and it's 13 1/2 miles to work so I want something that runs well on the roads and with a good selection of gears because it's an hilly route..
I have been looking at the Cannondale Bad Boy 650 and the 700 .. I haven't settled on those yet but I went to look at them in Evans and I really like them..
The thing is I am not a small bloke.. At the moment I'm probably about 18 - 18.5st and I not confident that the wheels on the Cannondale 700 (Continental Sport Contact 28-622 on Sun DS-2 32h 28" rims) could take my weight. The choice on the 650 is Mavic XM117 Disc 32h 26" rims with Maxxis Detonator 26x1.5 tyres, which look studier when the bikes are standing still in the shop..
So my questions are these:
1) Do you think these 700C wheels can take the weight of an 18st bloke. It's easy to believe the Cannondale "obsessively tested - no rider weight limit" blurb but it's a lot of money to spend on something I might damage in normal usage..
2) If I bought the 700 and didn't get on with the wheels how easy would it be to fit slightly chunkier wheels like those on the 650?
3) If I bought the 650 would I be able to fit the 700C style wheels easily later on?
4) There's a big difference in price - and I think a big part of that is that the 700 has hyrdraulic disc brakes. For someone who wants to ride quite seriously and will be riding a lot in bad weather (Manchester! lol) are hydraulic discs worth the extra?
I would also be interested in any opinions about the Cannondale Bad Boy bikes - I'm also looking at the Trek Sport Urban 2 and Soho 3 and the Scott Sportster P45
I'm Sorry if this is really basic stuff but since I last bought a bike the array of brands and styles and components has become just overwhelming. I'm not a complete novice, but there's too much choice about things I don't know enough about at the moment. The guys at Evans have been really helpful but I want to get clear in my own head what the realistic options are.
I appreciate any help and advice
thanks
