Thanks Dave, I think?, guessing you mean ceiling mounted hooks, with soft cushioned pads and secure upper rings to take a locking mechanism. A true master of understatement then:laugh:

I have a wall rack, not very good and had thought about ceiling fixings. To be honest I associated them more with space saving and I'm ok for space. I had envisaged a floor rack that allowed the bikes to be locked but also to give easy access for the bikes. Especially for the kids bikes that normally end up scattered across the garage. I normally end up re-ordering them each evening in the Summer. Maybe I'm in cloud cuckoo land but thought I might be able to get them using a floor rack. I can only imagine what could happen if I introduced them to ceiling hangers:ohmy:

what

I hang my road bikes from hooks screwed into the beams (two hooks per bike) and my mtb by its saddle. fortunately the garage has got good strong beams. i figure that if they can hold the roof up with all its tiles they can hold my bikes.

I hang some of mine on cheap plastic coated DIY-shop hooks by the front wheel. Keeps the bars high and out the way. To squeeze more in, alternate front and back wheels up.

Hmmm, now I'm learning, I wouldn't have considered hanging by wheels as would have been scared of damage. Is it better to hang by wheels than frame then?

Kids eh! We have a rule, reinforced by good old fashioned fear and threats. All three best bikes live leant against the wall in stacked formation, with a ground anchor in the garage floor, and a 4m cable securing all three, wound through the frames and wheels and ending with a d-shackle through whichever bike is outermost (usually mine). The kids are told in simple terms that if they don't stack and lock their bikes in this way, the burglars will come and steal them:evil:, and as it was their money that paid for the bikes in the first place, it will be their money that replaces them. This has worked unfailingly, and both have been given the responsibility of making sure the bikes are stacked and locked each night.

They have also been shown how to stack them carefully, and taught how to avoid scratching or damaging any of them. This too has worked. They are perfectly aware that if they scratch mine they will be beaten mercilessly.......

To the OP; I store six bikes at work. They all have individual floor-mounted axle stands which have a fork slotting between the dropout and the brake disc. They are small and neat, are not dependant on tyre width ( I couldn't fit 2.25" Tyres into a rack) and cost about £20 each.

Thanks Cubist, think your tack with the kids will be the one I adopt:biggrin: I've decided to press on with floor mountings as we have no shortage of space and I'd rather remove my concerns over one of the kids dropping a hung bike on their heads. Any chance of a link to the sort of axle stands you mean?.....thanks.....Al

The stand is called the Pro Bike Stand. I can find it online at a couple of places, but this is the cheapest link by about a fiver and no delivery charge:

Whisper this, but I have just been into the shop that sells Bikehut gear. And Carreras.....

And they have an identical version of the above stand for £11.99.

Except it says Bikehut on it.

thanks Cubist but I'm going for one of the floor mounted multi racks, but a metal working friend has kindly offered to make one for me:biggrin: I've been in the garage this morning working out dimensions etc and will give him the plan next week. Knowing him this thing will last longer than the house and it'll only cost me a pint.

I have a couple of these mounted on my wall HERE
Keeps floor space clear too

thanks, I have one of those but I'm looking at 6 bikes in total and only the eldest boy could get bikes safely from wall mounts. If I give over half of one garage to bike storage then they should all be accessible in one large floor rack. I'll use seperate locks on them though as the boys are in and out all day in the better weather. The custom rack will allow for 6 bikes and let people access door from either side. If I get any more bikes then the wall mount will be in use.
