At the last minute, we've decided to have a couple of nights away in North Wales. I'd love to take my bike, but haven't got a rack. I know from the thread debating the relative merits of rear and roof racks that roof is better, but it's not an option for me. I'm only 5' 1" so don't stand a chance of being able to get the bike up and down. We also don't have a tow bar. What are the chances of being able to get something decent and have it fitted tomorrow? What sort of price am I looking at? Halfords? Decathlon?

As a one-off. Have you got room to sling the bike in the back? Or rent a bike there?

We got a Thule a few weeks back, it's great once you get it set up right for your car and work out how the thing attaches, but it was a dog to do it the first time (probably not the thing to be trying just before you set off).
Think next time I'd go somewhere that would put it together and stick it on for me.

You won't have time but a Saris Bones is an awesome rear end bike rack. Ours pelted hundreds of miles around that Europe without complaint. Expensive but well worth it. My other advice is to avoid Halfords. They are officially miserable. Whereas Decathlon are cheap and cheerful generally.

There's no room in the car as we have a 15 month old son, and parents' law states that you must take a car full of baby things, and leaving only enough room to squeeze in a change of socks each for the adults.

Plus I'm not sure I'd be confident about removing and reattaching a wheel.
