I am doing up an old racing bike.

Its going to have to have a new free wheel which is 6 speed, so will it have to be matched with new chain and derailleurs so it will all mesh together??

no you should be ok but 1 worn component can lead to premature wear on others

An old, worn chain will struggle on a new freewheel.
The worn chain rings will accelerate wear and the worn derailleur may affect the changing.
