I presently have a front light set that uses MR11 halogens; can I replace one or both of these halogens with a MR11 LED lamp(s).

I've read somewhere that the minimal current draw may require the LED lamp to have a transformer; is this necessary?

Yes, provided the voltage is right.

Sadly most cycle lights will be 6volts Whereas your LED bulb will probably need 12v.

A transformer is often needed to reduce mains 240v down to 12v to run these LED bulbs within the home.

The actual LEDs will probably require a tiny constant current. Thankfully there's normally a circuit within the bulb that takes care of this so you don't need to worry about it.
