Been cycling for the last 6/7 months and now it's getting darker looking for some bike lights for my commute to work, I'm on roads and fields so need to be pretty bright, light and easy to fit if possible, any suggestions?

There's a whole long thread somewhere, possibly in what used to be called bike, kit and clothing.

Whatever you decide to go for get 2. Then when the batteries die in one you still have the other. Alternatively buy a really good light and an emergency "get you home" light. No matter how organised you are - you'll always encounter the "batteries died" scenario at some point!

Exactly the thread I have been looking for. As a new cyclist I have got the bug and now can't imagine a winter without cycling to work. My commute is mostly rural down country lanes and through villages so I am looking for a bright front light (I already have a rear light that goes with my current very small front light).

I am a little nervous about cycling both ways in the dark though.

Don't be nervous...the Crees are fantastic lights for the money. I've got one on my bike...and I've got another on order .

+ another 1 for hope Vision 1 and rechargeables.
Put a Blackburn Mars or Smart Lunar 1 or 2 on the back.

Always run 2 bright lights at the back (you can't see if one stops working)

Put a second cheap light on the front too so if the main one goes out (Hopes do) you can see until you stop to swap batteries.

I wanted a self-contained light which comes on & off the bike easily rather than having to strap a battery on & off morning and evening. I managed 2 winters with a 18650 Cree torch from China which is still doing very well. Mounts onto the bike with lockblocks and I bought a good quality charger and spare batteries. However, I was conscious that it was quite easy to dazzle oncoming drivers as the beam is rather broad.

Got a Moon XP300 in the summer and it has been very good indeed, fine for unlit country lanes and I run it on its lowest power setting on grey or rainy mornings/evenings. USB charging is very easy for me to do at home or at work. I have a small Moon Gem 1 front and rear as backups too.
