I'm going out to a lodge in the general area and looking to hire a road bike for a few days; can anyone recommend bike hire places?

Being a bit more specific would help - Glasgow and Ayr covers a huge area!
You're right, that makes total sense but we'll be based between Ayr and Glasgow with a car so I can travel a reasonable distance to pick a bike up.
So anything in Ayr, Irvine, Troon, Androssan, Kilmarnock, East Kilbridge, Dalry, Johnstone, Motherwell, Paisley, and Glasgow City area is in scope for me. Essentially anything in a 35mi radius of Prestwick
Ah, the car makes things a bit easier then!
I'd recommend Cycle Station just outside Kilmarnock. My cousin did a bit of work experience with them:

Excellent shout; i've dropped them a message, see if they have road hires - cheers!
Another recommendation, Carrick Cycles in Ayr.
They're on Facebook, or give them a buzz on:

RT Cycles in Glengarnock/Lochwinnoch definitely do hire. About half way between Ayr and Glasgow, close to Glengarnock railway station. Also will deliver to airport/ferry terminal or local area. And Martin''s a nice guy. http://www.cyclerepairman.co.uk/Bike-Hire/I7.htm
I think Bikepost in Troon do hires.
Irvine Cycles https://www.irvinecycles.co.uk/cycle-hire.html
Have bought bits and pieces from all 3 over the years, and used RT and Irvine for occasional repairs.
Irvine advise that if you're looking to hire when the Open is at Troon (14-21 July) availability may be limited.
This company says they hire gravel bikes
