Bike GPS routes

Hi,

Im just exploring the world of RidewithGPS and found that I can also export routes already created by other riders (or event routes).

My question is:

If I download a route that goes from A to B (going past M - where I live), if I download this route to my Garmin would it give me instructions from my starting point - M (or direct me to the nearest route point) or would it expect me to start from A - and only give instructions from A?

Hope it's clear!
Thanks
M

I think it would recognize that you're on the course and give you directions from M to B...

I have a garmin 800 and use ridewithgps for route planning. When I start a route it prompts me as to wether I want routing to the start point. a 'yes' gives you turn by turn directions to the start point (even if you've switched off turn directions for the main route).

That is my experience as well.

Not sure what garmin the op has, but i have a 205 and use RWGPS. Quite often i will detour a route and normally rejoin ok with the gps picking up the route.

FWIW if you load the TCX Course file into Garmin TC you can edit the way points, and even add notes.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking if you can join a course part way through and the Garmin recognise that you have done this?
Mine does not, neither of them (Edge 200 & Edge 500). If you program a course in and say you want to follow it, it expects you to start at the beginning and gives you directions (in a compass, your off route by this distance in this direction) to get to the start. It does not auto detect, IME, that you are already on the route until you have passed the start point. However, once you have passed the start point, it will direct you back to the route if you go off-course and tell you when you are back on course

(I frequently encounter this because the lane I live down is not marked correctly on any map (even Ordnance Survey) and as a result I start courses from around 3/4 km away from home, but record my rides from my door step, so I am always not at the start of the course.)

Hi
I have the 810 and yes you are correct I want to join a course part way through and wondered if the Garmin recognize and re -route me.

The Garmin will recognise when you are back on the route and tell you where to go from where you have rejoined. You want to turn auto re-routing off or "prompt" else it will always try to send you the most direct way to the finishing point rather than back onto the course.
