Right really looking forward to my 5 mile each way commute but how do I stick at it? Right now I can't wait but I know after the first day it will have been much harder than I'm hoping, and colder and wetter !! How do I keep at it?

Hello Pikeman,
Nothing clever here I'm afraid. You do just have to stick at it, and when the time comes that you just can't face it, go out any way! After that, you'll start to really enjoy it, but be warned, it's addictive!

Enjoy your rides.

I started out doing just 5 miles and to be fair even in the most miserable days it was over before I knew it! it's when you get that sensation of well being, 'in the zone' so to speak and you think to your self. THIS IS FANTASTIC!

It needs to become habitual, an ingrained part of your daily routine. Roll out of bed, breakfast, pack bag, get on bike go.Or whatever works for you.

Don't allow yourself space for doubts, alternative options or opt outs. Breaks can be particularly challenging, beware of holidays, long weekends or even ordinary weekends!

I put away my car and got a campervan. It isn't insured for work use, not even travel to work, so that cuts down my options even more.

I have only been commuting for the last couple of weeks and have loved every minute of it.

So different from years ago where it could seem to be a chore. Is it my mind set or that I am riding a much better bike? I don't know but have missed the last couple of days as I am away in the motorhome. It is with me on the bike rack, so might get the chance to go out later.

As a new cyclist I made the mistake of doing to much to soon going to fast, tearing up hills by the time i got home my legs were dead. Next day unable to ride to work, after 2 after two days and a lot of soul searching i got back on my bike now i take it steady listen to the advice of others this board has been an inspiration to me to be honest .

Just get out on it as much as you can over the winter period, knowing that it'll get more enjoyable nexy year when the weathers better, you'll be fitter by then.

Oh my friend, wait till the high kicks in, then you'll find yourself taking the long way home, tackling that hill around the corner that you used to look at and think " Sod that for a game of soldiers !!", the joys of silly commuter racing, learning the refined art of track standing at traffic lights.
I'll wait with baited breath for your " How could I even think I'll get bored " post
Enjoy Pikeman, enjoy ;-)

Sound advice :becool: - don't try to do too much too soon, and don't try and commute every single day on it. slowly, slowly catch the monkey
