Hi hope u can help. I need to buy a bike carrier and want to get a tow bar fitted. After exploring all options, this seems to be the safest option. Please can anyone advise me which is a good choice and how do I choose which tow bar? Swan neck or flange. I quite like the look of the Thule carrier. Very sturdy. I used to have Halford high mount. It came Un clamped to the boot and nearly lost my bikes. So safety is a must. Please can you advise which tow bar is the most compatible with tow bar tow bell carriers. Thanks in advance

I have had a swan neck tow bar on my last two cars and never had an issue with the carrier becoming loose. The first bike carrier was a Thule 903 which was rock solid but a bit of a beast to carry to and from the car, if you can park close to where you keep it then I suppose weight isn't to much of an issue. When I saw for sale a Thule 931 folding rack second hand I jumped at the chance and its been fantastic. Easy to carry with the rack folded and it fits into the boot if I don't want to lug it inside. The mechanism that secures it is far easier than the one on my old 903( discontinued now) and although it's expensive new its money well spent and it will have a good resale value.

Got a removable towbar fitted when we bought the clio, there was not any hatch mounting ones to fit.
got a thule three bike from Halfords, not the most expensive, but its great.
not the quickest to fit , requires a large spanner doesnt fold that well, but I dont have a great deal of problem storing.
the newer, more expensive ones have a quick release towball attachment, built in clamps and fold flat, they look brilliant but I cant justify it really.
I was never realy confident with the boot mounted rack , which I still have if anyone fancies it, but This one had been on trips over 250 miles ....

I have a swan neck towbar and a BakRak which is extremely useful as you can attach anything to it including roof mounted bike racks

We have a detachable swan neck tow bar and the two bike thule carrier and are very happy with the set up. Very easy to install both the towbar and the thule rack with no tools required.

Fixed flange if you expect to be wanting to add bolt-on accessories like bumper protection plates etc

I've had 3 MTB's on my Thule 3bike carrier and towed all sorts of trailers (all twin axle 8x4 or bigger) with my 1.6 Focus with no problems, despite the relatively low nose weight
