Bike banging/creaking around pedal area

The last couple of rides I've done I noticed some creaking/banging type noises coming the pedal arm area (I'm not all technical sorry)

Been out today and it seems a lot worse now. To my untrained mind this is something to do with bearings i'm guessing but don't know a thing about bike maintenance.

When I'm pedalling along it is fine, no noise. When I put pressure on the pedals or stand up on them the noise is horrendous. This doesn't seem to affect the riding of the bike but the noise is bloody annoying.

This is on a Trek FX 7.3

I've had it under a year and done just shy of 1k on it, so would this be under warranty ata ll (trying to find paperwork now) and am I right to assume bearings?

Thanks

Sounds like it could be the bottom bracket, between left and right pedal arms (right through the centre!).
Water and crud gets in, then rust, the bearings start to corrode.

It could all just need removing, regreasing and putting back but the Bottom Brackets tend to be sealed units. Not sure what type of bottom bracket it uses, can't get any specs.

Has it been left out in the rain, or used in the wet alot (if you live in the UK thats a given)

It is very annoying.

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't get left out in the rain but it has been used in the rain, only a few times though.

Is that much of a job for my local bike shop, cost wise also?

Take it in and get a price. Should be an hour at the most of labour. Not sure part cost but will be under £20-30 I would imagine.

Got it booked in for an initial check on Friday to see if they can diagnose it and if it's covered under warranty

Thanks for your input

Before you assume it is the bottom bracket, take a firm hold of both pedals and see if there is any play when you move them on their axis. A firm rock backwards and forwards should produce some wobble and noise if the bearings in the BB have gone.

No play at all on the pedal arms. The pedals themselves however do rock slightly. The guy at the lbs had a quick look for me and suggested changing the pedals first and take it from there.
This has given me the incentive to purchase my first set of clipless pedals and shoes to match! Will hopefully resolve the problem when i get them
