Big burn blister.

Had large burn blister on middle finger for a few days now. The liquid inside is slightly yellow with chunks in. The pain is getting better. Do I pop it though, I’m going out to a 40th tomorrow & it looks disgusting and hard to cover up as it is raised. I don’t want infection or to slow the healing process. Should I just drain it in the morning?

It's best to not pop it, as you then expose it to bacteria through the hole you've made. Maybe put a non stick dressing over it

And if it feels warm or starts throbbing I would get it checked out. I'm not saying it's infected but just keep an eye on it.

There’s chunks floating around inside it but don’t think it’s infection just clumps of what ever from the response.

With friction blisters I always stick a pin in them ASAP, because the blister skin makes a better dressing than anything you can stick on it, and because it'll be a whole lot more painful still if it's left until it gets squashed and rips wide open.

Rightly or wrongly I can't help myself and always drain blisters. Usually I find that a tiny hole with a needle allows them to be evacuated and collapsed; the thin outer skin quickly sealing the hole. I'm not sure I've ever had one become infected after doing this.

If you wanted to be extra cautious you could soak the whole area in iodine, isopropanol or another disinfectant before performing surgery; with a steralised needle of course (although don't heat it as you'll likely ruin its temper).

Of course the chunks might complicate things - if so you could perhaps try a small incision with a scalpel; again with plenty of anti-bacterial stuff.

Doubt he will be sewing with the needle after. Get the end poker red hot, then insert all the way through the finger for good drainage 😄

It’s drained now and feels so much better with full range of movement back. Might not look too shabby tomorrow evening.

Stick a hydrocolloid dressing on if advised by pharmacist.
