Chasing the Sun in Los Cristianos in mid March. Hoping to get some šŸš“ in and figured someone here is likely to have hired bikes there. Donā€™t mind paying for a better ride too.

Any suggestions / experiences welcomed ?

Cheers.

This place looks promising for hire of a decent ride. Iā€™ve sent them an emailā€¦ā€¦

If you give way to temptation and cycle up Teide, forget how warm it is at sea level and remember to carry enough extra layers for a long chilly descent!

A mate used to live on the island and would regularly see riders sweating on the climb but freezing on the descent!

He would ride up in summer kit, but with arm and leg warmers plus a gilet in his jersey pockets for the cold at altitude and the severe wind chill coming back.

Thanks for the thoughts ! I think itā€™s unlikely (Due to the Wife being in tow). Although I did suggest she get an Electric bike for whatever we end up getting upto - and she laughed and said ā€˜No thanksā€™ šŸ˜

The advice might still be valid however we do that trip though. I went to Tenerife when I was like 20. I was more interested in other distractions šŸ™„ then though. So Mount Teide didnā€™t get a look inā€¦..

So itā€™s a must-do this time šŸ‘

I hired from this place (or to be more precise my UK operator used them): https://bikepointtenerife.com/

Cheers. The one I found is approx 1km from our Hotel. And would be the easiest to work with as such.

Iā€™ve emailed asking if they can cater for my vertically challenged wifeā€™s preferred style / size of bike (Iā€™m easy on what I have after thatā€¦ā€¦). If they canā€™t help Iā€™ll give your suggestion a buzz.

You done much cycling over there ? Next issue will be researching ā€˜routesā€™ā€¦ā€¦

Ive only been once cycling. I covered a fair bit of the Island though.

Day 1 Teide fron San Miguel - https://www.strava.com/activities/6283862200

Day 2 East Coast - https://www.strava.com/activities/6288890402

Day 3 West Side of Teide - https://www.strava.com/activities/6292498330

Day 4 - Chio https://www.strava.com/activities/6296550332

Day 5 - Masca https://www.strava.com/activities/6301387321

Day 6 - Teide from Granadilla https://www.strava.com/activities/6305605116

The West side of Teide is the easiest way up the mountain but IMO the best climb on the island is Masca because its more varying gradient wise and harder. It was so technical though they drove us down rather than cycling down.

Thankyou for your Strava links: I bet that was a cool week. And yes - you covered some good ground there šŸ‘Œ Someone on fb I know just suggested Bikepoint for hiring a bike off too.

Short Taxi ride to Playaā€™s would be no bother. The only off-putting thing is they donā€™t take bookings for less than 3-days hire. Telling you to just turn up on the dayā€¦ā€¦..šŸ˜³

I spent a couple of days in Tenerife last March actually. The weather's usually perfect for cycling that time of year, around 20-23 Ā°C. I rented from Free Motion near https://www.free-motion.com/tenerife/rental Paid about ā‚¬35/day for a decent specialty. They've got higher-end stuff too, if that's your thing. Just book ahead online as March is pretty busy.
If it's your first time there, you can read this articles, they have some good information https://www.spain.info/en/region/tenerife-island/ and https://gowithguide.com/blog/tourism-in-spain-statistics-2024-your-in-depth-travel-guide-5686

Superb. Thanks for the articles too. Second time on the Island. First was 35 years ago mind !!!

Bike hire was not straightforward. One place on Playa's only did 3 days minimum (Unless we turn up and take our chances on one days hire; on the day). I struggled to communicate via email with another recommended on sizing for my vertically challenged wife. And if she cant get exactly the correct size - theres no point doing. So i think as this point we're commited to turning up at a couple of places early in the Holiday, then hopefully finding correct size availability for one day later in the Holiday.

Thanks again for your thoughts and links.

I also hired from Free Motion last year and was happy with the service and the bike. Absolutely no problems.

Thankyou Both.

I've tried two hire places so far, For various reasons none have allowed me to book one days hire with what bikes we want on the dates we want so far. Basically saying i need to take my chances turning up on the day.

I've sent Free Motion and email this Morning in the hope of something more concrete ! Fingers crossed ^_^

Freemotion turned out to be minimum of 3 days hire if booking ahead. Same as everywhere. Unsurprisingly perhapsā€¦..

Or if you want for a days hire: turn up the Evening before to check availability - or even on the day.

I may get a bike for 3 days as yet thinking about it. Thereā€™s no reason I canā€™t get up early and explore for a few hours 3 days running - without effecting my Wifeā€™s / our Holiday at all really. If she chooses / is able to hire a bike for her in that 3 day period: great. Infact i think i should run this past her tonight. Bit of solitary exploring sounds fun ! šŸ˜

I've hired bikes in Tenerife a few times. I was most recently there 3 weeks ago and got a Merida from Freemotion; 2 years ago it was a Bianchi from Bike Experience. I can recommend them both but Bike Experience get an extra nod after coming out to rescue me when I got my second ever puncture in the Canaries on the same ride (and I've not had one since of course). I think they do single day bookings too.
The climb up Teide from Los Cristianos is great; the descent from the top of the caldera to Boca Tauce is a welcome relief after the long ride. If you need water, stock up in Vilaflor as there's nowhere else en route.
Masca is also a great climb but it is usually spoilt by cars and buses getting stuck on the many hairpins and blocking the road.
If you want to go to Masca or up Teide from ChĆo, you'll need to negotiate getting from Los Cristianos through Las Americas and Costa Adeje which is "fun" to say the least.
Finally, if you fancy the challenge of a really steep climb, try Camino La Fuente in Valle de San Lorenzo.

Genius !

Bike experience do indeed take bookings for single days hire. Which Iā€™ve booked tonight. Managed to get the wife an XS size Liv MTB for which she was smack in the middle of the suggested 5ā€0-5ā€4 range. As long as sheā€™s happy on that - everything else will be a breeze šŸ˜

Thanks for the suggested rides too. Iā€™m about to go check those and others out now weā€™re actually booked.

Much appreciated once again šŸ™
