I saw this in use in on a TV programme about cycling in South Africa few years ago; only a quick shot so I wasn't even sure of what I'd seen. I made enquiries back here but nobody had ever heard of it. Now somebody on STW has linked to a video:

Bicycle Bungee

This would be perfect on a family ride or a school or even a club beginners' ride for the stronger rider to help out any weaker rider or anybody who was suffering towards the end of the ride.

Whaddya think?

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
It appears you can get one from http://bicyclebungee.com/
- will cost you NZ $305. I can think of all sorts of problems using such a device on busy UK roads, particularly amongst a group of cyclists. I can't make up my mind as to whether this is a spoof or not. Why don't you get one and let us know?

I can't see that it could be any more dangerous than a bunch of cyclists riding very close together. Clearly whoever used it would need to be at the back of the group and probably would be anyway if they were helping a tired child to get home.

I have used a bungee in the past to tow my son when he was younger but when I saw this in use on TV it looked so quick and easy, the slower rider just reached under the other rider's saddle and quickly hooked on.

I could have really used one of those 2 years ago. Lois & I were out cycling on Marriots way; a disused railway track part of Sustrans network route 1, when she clipped a bollard at one of the road crossings and sheared her left pedal completely off. I had to tow her 9 miles home by holding on to her handle bars with my left hand hand, and controlling my bike with just my right hand as she just sat back and relaxed for the whole journey..... my left arm ached for days afterwards.

I towed Mrs UD along the Mawdach trail with a scarf, worked fine.

...and next time you might let her sit on a bike

comical, just needs bit revamp though, hook only seems big enough to go round handlebars, and where she was placing it, seems like it would constantly makin her turn right so prob get annoying unless they made a centre clip, seems canny idea though. speed another issue as you would have to constantly keep cord tense otherwise bloke in front would feel like someone is tugging at back of bike which would get really annoying!

A length of scaffolding tube and a couple G clamps should work fine as an alternative

You should have made her pedal back one-footed! ;)

(I had a severe bout of cramp in my left foot once and had to cycle 4 miles along the canal towpath from Todmorden to Hebden Bridge just using my right leg. It's not so bad on the flat, but it would be very hard to ride uphill that way.)
