Hi, I've been looking for a hybrid bike for a long time which I can use for the daily commute amd the occasional cycle on trail/dirt paths. Im also taking part in a 60 mile charity race (non-competitive) so I'm really hoping to invest in a bike that will be as reliable and durable as possible with my small budget. (£240)

the bike models of previous years have been reduced in price so this is really the best time in my opinion

from what I undestand, lighter bikes have been better constructed and are thus more durable?

What appears to be the best value is the Voodoo Marasa 2014 as it has Shimano Altus gears and Mechanical disk brakes. I know I dont need disk brakes, but my experience of disk brakes is that they're very unreliable with poor stopping power. Also my previous bikes have always been budget, and the higher gears always made clicking sounds and didnt work properly so I'd like to avoid that at all costs. The only problem is the unecessarily large tires, which I suppose I'd have to change for extra cost.

Here are other bikes I've looked at, but due to my inexperience I have no idea which would be the best investment, despite the extensive research I've done.

the good thing about this one is that i can buy it from costco, and from previous experience if there was something wrong woth it they will take it back no questions asked so I have no need to worry.

Fuji Ansolute 2.3 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/absolute-23-2015-hybrid-bike-ec109145

Viking Camden is amother option I'm not sure about, it has Acera gears but an unecceasrily heavy suspension http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Viking-Ca...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item1c4b7d416f

Please help, I'm so lost I have no idea what to chose. I really need a bike even for health becuause cycling is the only sport that alleviates the pain from the nerve damage in my leg. Thanks in advance, I'll be so grsteful for any help.

If it's disc brakes you specifically want it would have to be the voodoo marasa, 24 gears, rapid fire shifters etc, not bad for the money.
Alternatively I would go for the giant, a well respected brand and modern v brakes are very efficient.
Your money, your choice.

Mhor has a Marasa and is most pleased with it...

carrying a big lump like me..

I have changed the two wheels to a higher spec due to a combination of my weight(19st) and my obsession to just head down anything that is cyclable..

If you can find a 2nd hand Whyte Portobello within your budget I would highly recommend it. They are a very good ride. I had a Trek 7.2 FX Disc and was disappointed with it. I didn't get a Whyte as I switched to a road bike. I have to admit I haven't tried their road bikes yet, but their hybrids are very good.

I had a look at the Marasa as I was going to change my 4 year old Voodoo Agua but I still preferred my Agua tbh.

Mine would be perfect for you ... I could even ride it to Twickenham this evening as I'm heading that way...

Spec here. I don't know if you can see this as a newbie. I'd be looking for a little over your budget with the extra commuter bits but it retailed at £900

That looks a right bargain, and you wont get a better deal second hand than from another forum member who is prepared to ride it to you to try/look at. If i was in the market, i would be having that.

I have a Claude Butler Voyager 400 19inch frame, (and i am 5 ft 9" 12 stone, i was 13 and half stone a few months ago), can't fault it, i use it, abuse it, and oil it, it has never let me down, and i quite often point it up or down tracks that it isn't designed for, but it fairs better than i do. I paid £100 second hand, and it was as new when i got it.
