Hi,

Our 6 year old son would like a bike for Christmas. We had seen the Carrera Blast in Halfords (£300), as were hoping that it would be reduced in the sales (it wasn't). I've therefore found the following 4 links, and was hoping that someone could offer some advise as to which bike is best value for money please? He would use the bike to ride to school (pathways), and also use the local dirt/shingle path. I'm sure as he gets older, he would got mildly off-road with his mates. He is quite small, so a lightweight frame would be good. Thank you in advance!!

A second hand Isla bike or Frog. Will keep value when he grows out of it.
If wanting new, wait for upcoming Black Friday sales?

Personally out of the bikes linked I'd go for the Cube, there fantastic little bikes. No fussy heavy complicated suspension that doesn't work, just a simple no nonsense bike. Cube also do a range of accessories for this bike, mudguards and kick stand, that fit perfectly.

In fact a few years ago I purchased the 24 inch version of this exact bike with mudguards etc for my son at Christmas. We had several years of great adventures on it and he even undertook his first bikepacking trip on it. We sold it recently after he'd grown out of it and we got a really good price for it as well. Somewhere else another young lad is hopefully ripping around his local forest trails on it ,just like my lad was.

Thank you very much. Appreciate the advice

Welcome, and good work encouraging your child to cycle.

Of the bikes listed I'd go for the Cube or Specialized because they don't have heavy and unnecessary suspension.

I do work on neighbour's bikes, and groan when I see kids full suspension bikes that weigh more than my own steel tourers.

If secondhand is OK go for Frog or Isla, as recommended above.

I'd go second hand, but then again our kids budget is no more than £100. If they really get into cycling then you can always upgrade, but if it's only used a few times in the summer months than a good brand new one is an expensive outlay.

If hunting in the second hand market keep an eye out for the Wiggins bikes. They were relatively light and quality little bikes for little money whenever Halfords were selling them off.

My girls both had Carrera Saruna's, which although don't have suspension, were great little bikes which gave no bother.
