Do you need to walk? Do you want to potentially use trainers rather than always clipping in? How much money do you want to spend? Do you want a plasticky road shoe look or a chunkier MTB look? Will you be riding in all weathers, cold, wet (presumably inevitably in lancs), hot (latter unlikely for 6 months of course)

The best shoes are the ones that fit you best and do what you need from them

That's the problem everyone goes on about clipless pedals and shoes just wondering what's the best thing to do leisure cyclist on road bike but my commuter bike has flats so would my road bike be better with flats got the clips at moment first road bike

Mr Haematocrit

msg me on kik for android
given the choice I would clip in every single time, on my road bikes, commuter, my mtb and my folder (don't clip on my folder currently)
I simply find that I pedal more consistently when clipped in.

I appear to have possibly retorn my meniscus clipping in and out, so I am not a fan at the moment!
However, flat pedals if it's wet are a bit of a nightmare

If a leisure cyclist, I'd say it's quite important to be able to walk comfortably at the cake stops . Look at the specialized Tahoe shoes and similar styles from shimano and bontrager

If your new to it - go for some M520 pedals and a pair of Northwave or Shimano shoes. You can't go far wrong with that set up.
I wish i had been directed towards SPD when i first started cycling, instead of being taken towards SPD-SL. They are good, but a buggar to walk on when off the bike.

+1 for the M520 pedals & Shimano shoes. You can get road style does to fit them now but I wear MTB style as I prefer to be able to walk comfortably when off the bike. The big advantage of the M520 is the low price, not the end of the world if you don't get on with them.

I agree the M520 is a good starter for a pedals but for shoes I find that question a bit harder, its a case of the more you spend the better the shoe.
Some people can ride with cheap shoes but they dont suit me.... but just make sure they fit you cheap or not?

On my Sirrus, i have M324 dual sided pedals, and use a pair of muddyfox (16.99) shoes, they work okay, not the best ..... Might ask the Mrs to buy me a decent pair for Christmas
