I'm looking for a core2 processor lap top, hopefully for about £400 - 450, and unless I'm being too greedy a 17" screen.

I've done the usual Kellkoo, PC World, Comet, etc searches, but does anyone know of any bargains that I may possibly have missed?

I am told by my supplier at school that the PC World warranty is pants - her words exactly. We purchased my sons from John Lewis. It is not only the price you need to consider but the after sales and ease of getting things fixed.

Ebuyer + 1 for personal use

Can also recommend Dabs I have spent about 80k (business account) with them and have always found them very competitive.

Had forgotten dabs though if anything goes wrong they tend to refer you back to manufacturer in my experience, mind you that would be the same with ebayer. What about amazon (as long as it's not delivered by citylink!) Also look at what laptop mag for guidance I found it very useful.

It is my understanding that Dabs have moved to DHL and binned Citylink in response to 'customer feedback.'

There is no one 'best place'. It varies constantly depending on which product you want and what time of day it is! I think the best idea is to figure out which laptop you want then look for the best place to get it.

Also, check the spec 'very' closely. We've just bought an HP laptop for our daughter from the HP website. Not only was that the cheapest seller but it has the best spec. Other places were selling the same laptop for £30 more but with only a 120Gb hard drive instead of the 160Gb in the one from HP. Some also had cheaper batteries instead of the 4.5 hour Li-Ion one we got.

So much can vary. Processor type and speed, RAM, you name it, so make sure you are comparing like with like.

Incidentally, Currys have a Dell on sale at £400 that is good spec:

Another point worth mentioning. RAM is very cheap right now so don't pay over the odds for a laptop with lots when you can buy a Gig off Crucial for a tenner!
