It's a solvent. Use oil.

To be a little more helpful, perhaps...;)

As I understand it, WD40 isn't a lubricant, although it works like that for a short while, or for unsticking things, but it just evaporates off. Oil can be used, but tends to leave sticky residues that collect muck and grit, especially if you don't clean and lube the chain religiously often (and some of us don't:blush:). The best thing is a proper bike lubricant, I use Finishline myself, it goes on and the wet fraction evaporates off, leaving a non-sticky layer of something like teflon. There are other brands. They come in different formultons, depending on whether you do a lot of very wet off rroad riding, or just normal road commuting or whatever.

To be a little more helpful, Finish line lube is very good, either red, which is dry or the green which is more like traditional oil for wet/ mucky conditions.

A visit to your local bike shop and a request for chain lube should sort out your transmission.

Any lubricating oil should do the rest of the lubricating.

FWIW I use Finish Line Cross Country - (the green topped bottle) and it does a fine job all year round.

I've been reading on here, whats the best for lubricating parts? I read here that WD40 isn't widely reccomended? Why?

To answer your question specifically fish...WD40 is a lubricant of sorts...but not the kind we need on bikes. Its thin, evaporates and its solvent based. So what it does is temporarily introduce some insignificant lubricating properties to your chain. At the same time, because its a solvent, it washes away any oil you already have on...and you end up with a useless shiny chain. Even if you apply it every day..it just doesnt hack it as a lubricant, and then kiss goodbye to your chain in a matter of weeks.

I do use WD on bikes (sparingly), but only to the derailleurs after cleaning..purey to displace any water etc, which is one thing that WD was specifically designed for.
