So, decided to go for a pedal with a mate from work. The idea was Berwick, Holy Island, Fenwick, Belford, Bamburgh, Seahouses and return, 60ish miles total. We were going to pedal south into the prevailing SE wind and then return using it as a nice tailwind. Pedalled into the wind, just keep going, just keep going, got to Seahouses and what happened? Rain started and wind stopped! How f@*king typical is that! Nevermind though, saw Hares, Deer, Tawny Owl, Lambs playing king of the castle on a dung heap. Miles per hour = avg 10.5. Smiles per hour = too many! Ok, also had worlds best and biggest eccles cake on Holy Island, and on the return home Fish and Chips from Lewises in Seahouses. All in all, nice afternoon.

I did about 15 miles with Small II earlier, the route was chosen to be pretty much confined to dense trees, her 10-year old legs seem to struggle with the wind more than mine do.

However, I've now got 996.2 miles up on that bike so I'm just off out for a short loop.

I managed a short 17 mile loop in the late morning/early afternoon. I chose a short distance because I have off the bike for two weeks so I didn't want to wear myself out on the first ride. There was a nasty headwind for about 5 miles or so, combined with a moderate shower. I stuck with it though and managed a rolling average of 17.0mph over the 17 miles.

When we lived in Newcastle we used to go to Holy Island; I love the place. There was a story in the press about a bloke who deliberately drowned his car on the causeway and took refuge in the little cabin on stilts. He and his young son were lifted off by a helicopter and later, when interviewed by the press he made the mistake of admitting he'd done it so that his son could have a ride in a helicopter.

Two days later he received a bill from the RAF for £5000 for an hour's use of their helicopter.
