Hi Guys,

I am looking at insuring my bike and was wondering if you could offer me some suggestions?

A quick search on the web brought back cycle guard and E&L.

Does anybody have any experience with either of these, and if so how would you rate them?

I assume i would only really need insurance for theft from my house, and perhaps if someone tried to rob me or if I were knocked off?

Thanks.

Through your house insurance is usually the best answer.

All mine are covered with no quibbles by hiscox within the terms of my H&C policy at no extra cost. I checked an on line bike insurer just yesterday. they wanted £500 pa for £5000 worth of bikes,

M&S home insurance are usually recommended as good for bikes.

I had a smidsy 18 months ago, As soon as i was fit to ride i got a new-for-old replacement bike through hiscox long before the claim against the driver came though - Hiscox then claimed off the drivers insurance with no involvement from me.

Hi guys,

I do not have home insurance exactly.

As I am still a student, I have a student policy which covers my valuables in my house up to a certain amount.

I pay extra for my photography equipment, but my policy only covers up to £400 for a bike, hence why I thought it would be better to go with someone else for the bike?

Thanks.

in that case look at the ctc....

http://www.cyclecover.org.uk/

I've just seen that it is underwritten by Hiscox - see my post above

i am quoted a fairly typical around 10-12% of bike value per annum, but given that it is ctc endorsed i'd be confident there would be little wriggling on the small print

Whatever you do, definitely avoid E&L, they are notoriously good at getting out of claims.

As for cyclecover and others, take a good read of all the small print, security requirements, approved locks etc etc.

Marks & Spencers contents insurance is mentioned many times, there are no specific bike requirements/stipulations, items are covered up to the value of £4000 at home or away.

Cycleguard is reportedly very good at not paying up as well.

Have a look at ETA (Not the Terrorist group in Spain, thankfully!) They're pretty decent (Read the small print though, although you should do that before you take out any insurance) and they're cheap. They quoted me 50 quid for a £400 bike, and you get a tenner off if you pay by direct debit.

I think I will look at M&S home and contents insurance then. Can I get this even if I am just renting? Thanks.

I think so, I had contents insurance (rather than buildings and contents) through them before.
