Best cleaning method

Hi there, I am looking for some advice on which is the best way of cleaning a rusty bicycle chain and sprockets? I have had a bike store for a couple of months due to personal circumstances. I have now had this bike out and the chain is rusty and so is the sprocket set.

So my question is, how do I de-rust the chain and sprockets?

1. clean/degrease first (use turps/white spirit/diesel).

2. Then Wire brush/wire wool

If the chain and sprockets are very dry and are broadly free from muck then go straight to 2.

WD-40 spray also gets surface rust off fairly efficiently. After use, ensure the chain and cassette are free of any remaining WD-40, then oil the chain, then wipe excess oil off.
