I know a case will offer the best protection, but I am looking to save weight on the plane so going towards a bag with good padding. So far the 3 polaris looks the business for value and quality. Any recommendations ?

What kind of bike are you taking and where?
I have a hard shell bag cost just over £200 I used to transport my road bike in Europe.
Then I used a soft bag from Rutland cycles for about £30-40 to transport hybrid bike. There was no problem at all. There are some who says that soft bag is better as baggage handlers will be more careful. Perhaps it is true but I wont take that risk with my carbon.

Its going to be for a full carbon framed bike to Mallorca planning on putting clothing with it too weight limit wtih easyjet 32kg. Baggage handlers don't give a hoot by the way thats from the horses mouth I have worked airside at Edinburgh Airport for 13 years

I know this thread is a couple of years old now but is this bag still recommended for use on aircraft for around this price bracket, or has something better come along in the last couple of years?
