Best bike for commuting

Hello, new to this. I got a new job recently and wanted to start cycling it's only about an hour ride. My current bike is a ......... Reebok switchback so anything is an improvement. I would ideally like a hybrid with a max budget of £400. I don't want suspension but with all of the choices on the market I'm lost. So any suggestions?

What sort of surfaces will you be riding on? Just roads, or other? When you say an hour journey, what kind of distance?

When traveling to work it will be all road. It is about 10miles there and back. But I would still like to take it on a trail through a wood

Halfords have the excellent Boardman MX Sport or Hybrid Comp on promotion at just under £400.

The MX is more off road focused, the Comp more on road, and both are quality bikes.

Or for a bit less there are the highly rated Carerra Subways, which represent great value for money.

You might want to consider joining British cycling, third party indemnity/legal cover and 10% off at Halfords so buying the bike would pretty save you the cost of the annual membership

Also in that price range is the Triban from Decathlon, between £250 and £400 depending on what you get, all of them get pretty good reviews.
