Best Ball Bearings ?

Hi again all,
Looking on Amazon for 1/4" Ball bearings for my rear hub, I'm struggling to pick the best, so I'm relying on your sound recommendations as always.

Which is best:- stainless steel, chrome steel or carbon steel ?
For smooth running and longevity ?
All are similarly priced, so which do you guys use / recommend ?

Depends on the type and grade of the 'chrome'.

My instinct would be to look for a brand like SKF - maybe look at SKF's website as to what the grades actually mean. After all, "for high temparature" of "for high speed" isn't relevant for cycling

Use whatever your LBS has on the shelf. It's unlikely you will notice the difference, to be honest. If you don't know what type of bearing came out of the hub, then it doesn't really matter what goes back in, I would suggest.

I'll stick my neck on the block. Absolutely any ball will be fine. They are manufactured to work at tens of thousands of rpm. A 6mm ball can handle huge dynamic and static loads far, far in excess of us piddling cyclists.

Just make sure the balls and raceway have a load of grease.
