My LBS is supposed to get me the Fulcrum 5 wheelset (with Continental 4000s) and have loaned Fulcrum 7s (with Continental GP tyres)to me in the interim. So I am clacking away with them - who needs a bell?

This could be a good chance to upgrade and try something different. Although I do like the flat spokes on the Fulcrums 5s.

My woman has Bonty Race Lites with brushed metal flat spokes and they look look awesome but we heard that they may not be so good for an 85kg rider over the long term. Plus I don't know about the his-n-her wheels when we are riding (but that's not really an issue)

What would be a good alternative to the Fulcrum 5 wheelset that are equal in looks around that £200-400 range that I can use everyday? I do like the flat spokes on the Fulcrums 5s.

I started off with Fulcrum 5's on my Victoire. Didn't really like them - too "budget".

Changed for a set of Easton EA50's at a little over £200 and I'm very pleased with them. For a little over £300 you could get the EA70's, I think.

I also have Mavic Ksyrium Elite's on my Six13 and these are also very good.

Best of all the wheels I have are my handbuilt Mavic Open Pro rims on Campag Record hubs.

I had EA50's on my new bike (I weigh 127kilos and was 22 kilos heavierwhen I got them) and they broke in the first week (the LBS had already told me they would but I wouldn't listen).

Replaced with Fulcrum 5's (like they said I should to start with).

Have ridden 1500 miles over four months, hit potholes and all sorts, not a flicker of damage to the 5's.

If you like 'em, I say buy them. How they can be described as budget next to the EA50's for the same money with round silver coloured naff looking spokes I am not quite sure.

It's a difficult choice to make - either the safe bet Fulcrum 5s or the Easton range - hmmm.
I've heard good things about Easton wheels but I am concerned that I may not be able to dig deep enough into my pockets to get the best out of Easton.
Are there any others to match the durability of the Fulcrum 5s on price, durability and looks?

Thanks Simon, that's good to know. If I pay out £400, I would like to have the wheels for a long time.
This road bike lark is expensive!

I'm with Simon, the 3's are very good having tried a piar but not been able to justify/afford them right now.

finally decided on some wheels - Went straight to Sigma Sports who had plenty of stock and came out with some Fulcrum 3 wheels. They look great and the quick spin I had on them makes me feel as if I made a good longs lasting choice.
Thanks for all your help and advice gentlemen.
