What type of hub is it? If it is a freewheel with (most likely) 8-speed freewheel screw-on, the axle is not bent but broken. More info needed for a prognosis.

OK, I have the answer for you. The hub is not bent, the axle is cracked. It only appears bent. If you remove the axle and block the one end and immerse the axle in a glass of water and blow into the other end, bubbles will come out where the thread begins and the blank section ends. The axle is cracked. Fo' sho'

So, would it be easier to replace the axle or buy a new wheel?
Axles are cheap but replacing it requires some skill and knowledge. Broken axles are a problem with freewheel hubs but if this only happens to you occasionally, there's no need to shift to newer freehub wheels which don't have that problem. Weigh up costs, hassles and likelyhood that it will happen again.
