I have been a cyclist for a long time, for the first time I have had to renew wheel axles not once but twice, one a Shimano Ultegra front, it was bent, the other a Formula rear it was bent, neither would adjust to run freely without a tight spot, new axles and all is fine, now have I been lucky all these years and is it a common occurence, or are axles weaker than thy used to be?

Any potholes or kerbs involved?

Don't know, the Ultegra was kindly donated by @Andrew_Culture the Formula is on a wheel that came with a second hand Caadx I bought, so history unknown.

I hit a kerb in Richmond Park at about 40mph, but I managed to stay upright thanks to the really wide verges. I had my carbon forks checked after that but didn't even consider the axel. Sorry!

This was the same incident that entirely removed any desire I had to descend at insane speeds.

One of our larger cyclists have bent some no name voodoohoodoo axles. Usually a specific event is involved. Branded replacements fare better

I haven't had problems with bent axles since the days when 6 speed blocks were high tech, our club rides would often contain a few miles of rough stuff and I would occasionally bend or break a rear axle. I thought that with modern cassettes the bearings were close enough to the drop out to eliminate this problem, and I don't think I've ever bent a front.
