Belisha beacon without a zebra crossing

I’ve tried googling this and just came up with answers to the reverse (zebra crossing without a beacon). Near me there is a junction between a main road and a side road in a T. The side road is split by an island straight away with a tall post (way taller than a normal beacon post) and a Belisha beacon on top. There is no zebra, the only road markings are the standard give way/dashed line on the entry side. Any idea what the status of this is?

I'm thinking that it is a historical thing, maybe there used to be a zebra crossing there and no longer is, but no-one took down the beacon when that was removed, possibly because it was a lot higher than normal (seems almost to be on top of a regular signpost) and so maybe would have needed specialist equipment to remove it.

What is interesting is that if you go back to the StreetView pictures from 2008, there was also a beacon on the post of the nearby crossing (on the A207 Bellegrove Road) but that had been taken down by the time the 2010 photos were taken.

Thanks for this. Interesting. I don’t remember it ever being a zebra in the 20 years I’ve been here but I may have been asleep

Bit high for a Belisha , possibly just repurposed as a light? Have you seen it at night?
