Morning all,

Thought I'd introduce myself and say "hi".

I've been lurking on the site for a few months now before registering and posting but have picked up so much valuable information on here. I'd like to offer my thanks to the dedicated owners of this site and the experienced chaps who take time to post their considered advice for us novices.

Finding Cycling
A charity football match about six months ago I 'played' in finally demonstrated to me just how unfit I had become as a car-driving, home-working, occasional office-visiting 'business type person'. So, at 36 years of age and with an ever-increasing waist-band, I decided it was high time to take charge. I'm 6'2" and, three months ago, I tipped the scales at 16 stone.

Then I discovered cycling!

With no idea at the time whether I'd take to the sport (and after taking some advice from friends), I visited the local bike shop with an entry-level hybrid in mind, spending approx. £250 on a Dawes 201. While I'm now almost reaching the point of arousal whilst looking at some of the more expensive bikes, compared to my last one some 20+ years ago, climbing aboard the Dawes felt like mounting technology at the peak of its perfection.

So poor was my fitness when I first got the bike home, that the inaugural trip 'around the block' saw me literally crawl back into the house on my knees. My poor wife watched me flip like a fish on the floor as I gasped for air. It was only as I gained composure about 15 minutes later that she finally decided not to call the emergency NHS helpline.

I remember marvelling at the time about "one day" setting off for places 10 miles away from where we live and looking at barely sloping hills thinking "Imagine riding up that!".

Now, just 3 months later, I'm referring to the 25 milers as "a short one" and I've got a number of 60 milers under my belt. I'm sprinting up those "hills" I'd shuddered at during those first couple of weeks. I'm boring my friends with cycling stories (although, to be fair, they're pretty understanding). I'm even starting self-indulgent threads about my progress on cycling forums!!! ;)

I friggin' love cycling!
I'm addicted!
I'm fitter!
I'm healthier!
I've got a sun tan!
My thighs are growing by the day!
...and I'm down from 16 stone to 14st10!

Why didn't someone tell me about all this 20 years ago!!!!?

Welcome to the forum SBH

Yes cycling is great all rounder for health / transport and a great way to notice things (mother nature) you wouldn't have bothered with while driving around in a car.

Glad to know you're enjoying yourself

A good news story SBH.

One word of caution- you can,as I did, get a little too obsessed with the game and the need to get out on the road overtakes any enjoyment derived from it.

On the plus side you have "the upgrade" to look forward to - a really good bike will be light years better than the current model you are riding.

Well done! As a fellow noob, I can totally agree with the obsession thing. I am on the sofa today with a killer headache, but am planning on building on my 10-miler tomorrow when I should feel better.

Just thinking about getting my kit on makes me smile, and I love my Trek 7.2fx wsd - although I did get on a Trek road bike at my LBS at the weekend and felt slightly dirty as though I was cheating!

SNAP!

My story is really similar to yours. I was a 36 year old, car-driving (35K per year!) often home-working, unfit & slightly overweight person..... until I went to Coniston in Sept this year to support my mates / collegues who were doing a challenge. (17K bike, 10K hike, 3K canoe) I decided I should do it next year & decided to borrow a bike and see if I liked it. I did & then my husband decided he would train wih me to motivate me, he bought a new bike & I gave the borrowed one back & bought a 2nd hand one. We are 4 weeks in and totally addicted. I ride 5 times a week and yesterday we tackled a big hill and were really pleased with ourselves at the top (even though we could have done with a little oxygen when we got there) We too are now sailing up the smaller hills that 4 weeks ago were such a struggle & are now doing regular 10 mile rides.

I love cyclin'
I'm fitter
Feel healthier
(Not sure that my thighs are growing, they need to shrink I think) ;)
I've lost a little weight
& I am also talking about cycling non-stop.

I wish I'd donme this years ago too.

Good stories SBH and smudgley!

It may get expensive if you succumb to the temptations to upgrade your kit often as I do. However it is indeed a great hobby/activity, and as you say wish I would have discovered it when I was much younger!

Aaw, I love stories of happy people enjoying their bikes.

Welcome, SBH, and well done.

There's so many of us "born agains" on here, and we all love it. Is there anyone around that's tried and decided they hate it?

(I guess such a person wouldn't hang around on a cycling forum, but I've yet to hear of anyone anywhere that tried cycling again and decided it wasn't for them).

Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Funny thing is, LC, after my first effort, it was probably touch and go for a moment. Can't really say I enjoyed that first ride although it quickly got better.

As for the upgrades everyone's talking about, I wonder if there's anyone around who didn't go longer than a month before thinking "hmmmm, wonder what the next bike up the food chain is like?"

Do you ever find that perfect bike or does the yearning just continue as you move, up, up and up the price ladder?

And now it's time to introduce you to n+1 where that is the number of bikes you want, and n is the number you have now.
