before using new wheels...

Decided to repair and upgrade my older road bike, and yesterday had a pair of Aksiums delivered.

Now before I attach the new cassette and head out riding, is it advisable to take new wheels to the lbs for the once over (spoke tension etc..) or should it be reaonable to expect they are good to go out of the box?

Aksiums will be just fine.

They will be fine to ride - probably need of a slight tweak after 100miles so check then.

I would hope so... but you can check spoke tensions for yourself....
go round "plucking" the spokes like a guitar string.

Drive side spokes should all sound the same note as each other.
Non drive side spokes should all sound the same note as each other.

when I say "same note".... like within 2 or 3 adjacent keys on a piano...

anything much different than that... send 'em back
