How much physical strength/effort do those bed require to lift - and put back down
With a mattress on them, they pull up quite easily once you have initially lifted them a few inches. They usually have a big fabric handle on them which makes things easier. As for pulling them down, again, they come down easy once the initial inertia has been overcome but this is at the top of the reach. But it's doable as long as your wife has decent grip strength and mobility. We don't tend to go in ours that often, it's just for spare bedsheets and stuff that we don't want in the loft

Thanks all - wasn't expecting this format to be as popular as it evidently is

Over bed storage units look good.

Is it single or a double bed?
I'd not considered that - although the room is pretty small and the (double) bed will take up a fair bit of room as it is; not sure I could fit in another piece of significantly-sized furniture.

Ours all have drawers

they do waste a lof of potential space with the gaps and stuff
and anyweight in them causes problems as they are only designed for a small amount of bed stuff

The one you have shown does seem to have massively more storage
but I would worry about it all being accessible - and the stuff at the top not just becoming a place to stuff you never use again

do seem like a good idea though
Thanks - that pretty much confirms my reservations about drawers. Another issue seems to be that if the drawers are takiing up all of the available space it's likely that they'll foul bedside tables.. Certainly won't be looking at these!

Accessibility would be less of an issue - generally I don't put stuff under beds that I'm going to need regularly..

We have a low-slung job from west elm, Mrs C likes it, I think it's mid-century. There's plenty of space underneath, we slide plastic storage boxes underneath, gives plenty of space for extra things. Cat does occaisionally throw up under the bed so it's useful to be able to move things out to clean up the mess.
lol - thanks for confirming that I still don't want a cat.

Appreciate the thoughts about your bed; swinging back towards this idea now myself..

@wafter
If you want to avoid the visual noise of things under the bed, you could put a platform valence on the bed. This goes under the mattress and on the base.

Cheers - good idea although that would partially defeat the purpose of buying a nicely styled bed.. although I suppose I could attach something to the inside of the frame to hide the horrors but allow the frame to remain visible.

Thanks - seems like a good price too, although unfortunately I'm after a full-sized double, and am not really sold on fabric beds.

I did see the same seller does have one of the nice scandi style John Lewis jobs on offer; which strongly appeals on aesthetic grounds. Not sure about the construction though (I'd hope it's decent since it's John Lewis but it's not going to be the walnut it states in the title).

Oooh. I haven't been around much lately - you've got a new flat! Congratulations! Can't help with the bed though
Thank and yes; finally - details in this post

While I'm still liking the Ottoman in principle I'm finding it hard to find anything I like / with good reviews / is within budget.. will keep looking but am currently swinging back towards something more tradtional..

Cheers for all the input - it's been very helpful

New flat needs bed.

What I'd really like is some skinny, low-slung, minimalist mid-century-modern effort.. however considering under-bed storage would likely double the stash capacity of my nice new shoebox I think I need to consider something more practical.

I was originally going to go with a traditional bed and just stick stuff under it but I really don't like the visual noise this would likely create.. so I'm looking at beds with built in storage.

I don't much like the aesthetic of divans, but have seen some "Ottoman" jobs that have a gas-strut assisted hinged base at the headboard. This allows the base and matress to pivot open like the yawing chops of a hungry, hungry hippo to access the sweet internal volume beneath...

Has anyone had any experience of such beds? I'm a bit wary as the format seems over-represented in the low-end of the market, while the struts would be something else to go wrong (and potentially be irreplacable once it's old).. plus I'm a bit skeptical of potentially stubbing my toes on frames that run all the way down to the floor at the sides..

Any thoughts greatly appreciate as always, ta

can the bike not just have a big cuddle under the duvet ? stuffing it under the mattress just seems wrong - I would take the upward facing pedal off just in case it went some where it shouldn't if you rolled onto your back

There is a problem with drawer where the ones at the head end won;t open due to the bedside table
However, we have one with a solution - the drawer is only half width so it opens fine

but does mean that there is a lot of unusable space at the top

every solution has a problem
