I gave up on Radio 2 many years ago, after a long period of it being my regular listen.
They seemed to make a conscious effort to aim for a younger group of listeners, and in doing so just alienated themselves from their once loyal listeners. Whether or not they succeeded in attracting the younger listeners I have no idea, and nor do I care. I have made alternative arrangements and it doesn't involve the BBC; who have lost the plot in general IMHO..

This.

Probably about the time that Steve Wright started in the afternoon, what a sack of shite that was.

Mmmm, I'm a Radio 5 Live girl - I migrated across from Radio 2 in '91 when the station started up, as that's where most of the sports commentaries were. I've barely listened to R2 since.

I went to school with Claudia Winkelman - she was in the year above me.

I used to listen to 208 and 199, then when radio 1 started, was that for many years. But now when I'm driving more likely to listen to FM classic. Still listen to Caroline from the www.

Ken Bruce during the week and Paul Gambachini on a Saturday are just about the only Radio 2 programmes I listen to now. It used to be all day.

Someone on here mentioned Solid Gold Gem and I listen to that quite a bit now.

I heard Steve Wright the other day, it was them same rubbish as years ago, I thought I had gone through a time warp.

I quite liked Steve Wright in the afternoon, when it was on Radio 1 - about 40 years ago! To say he has overstayed his welcome would be a bit of an understatement. He is 68 years old now, and it shows. Take the pension and run, Steve.
Blimey! Steve Wright in the Afternoon used to be on the radio every day when I worked in a factory in the Midlands in the early 1980s. I thought that he would have retired years ago!

I've never been a Radio 2 listener and I just assumed it wasn't aimed at me. Not the demographic or whatever. I wonder what the listening figures are?

Barnet,
I am slowly coming round to giving up on R2. It is far too celebrity orientated and 1980's now, as if music started in that decade. It also has left me behind trying for a younger audience. Very rarely do they play the music I like. There is the blues show on a Monday evening, and I do like Tony Blackburn and Johnnie Walker. Also Lisa Tarbuck on a Saturday is good. But other than that I listen to R5, R4 and Classic FM.
