Just wondered how much I should expect to pay to get my bb30 greased on my new cannondale Road bike at a local bike shop. Thanks for any help

In between here and there
On a NEW Cannondale it should be FOC, take it to the shop you bought it from? How many miles and what make you think it needs greasing? They are sealed units. You can open them but not really supposed to

I thought (hoped as I have just bought a Cannondale) that they had sorted the problems with the PF BB30?

Greased? It shouln't need greasing other than on the front surface between the end cap and the bearing. DIY!

Undo the bolt holding the crankset on (it is usually a self extracting bolt so will push the crank arm off as you undo it), pull it out, end caps off, clean it all out, smear grease on front of bearings, end caps back on, crankset back through, tighten bolt, it is literally a 1 bolt, 5 minute job!

What is wrong with BB30?

I have a Boardman CX, which sounded like it was running dry after just 500 miles and was, my understanding is that a standard BB30 its easy to have mud and water ingress and Cannondale are fitting PF BB30 which if you look and a similar appearance to hollowtech II BB a slight outboard part which offers protection.

I was in quite a good bike shop merely looking at the Cannondale and without me even mentioning it I was told "Cannondale have solved the problem with the BB30 on this model with the PFBB30" this is where I assumed the problem was wider spread than just Boardman CX I had (Boardman's had a large batch of supposedly internally dry or very little grease BB30 from the BB30 supplier).

I'd heard of that Boardman issue. Never heard of this PFBB30 thing though.

Having ridden BB30 for years now (ATM I have one Vision/Cannondale BB30 bearing set and one SRAM bearing set), I can't say I have noticed any problems with water ingress etc. That said, my crankset is swapped twice weekly during the racing season as it gets moved between my road bike and TT bike every weekend so gets lots of TLC.

I take it back, it is a PF30! Looks like all the 2014 Supersix have these.

I would either follow Roberts instructions, or expect around £15 - 20 labour costs, guess many bike shops have a minimum of half an hour labour charge. How many miles have you done? Only keep asking as it is unlikely to be the actual sealed bearing, more likely grit in and around making the noise.

I have never worked on a BB30, mine has been ok since the initial problem, although probably only about 1500-2000 miles on it.

http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/bb30-bearing-system-installation-and-removal The first part gives some instruction on getting the cranks off and then take a look around

when i stop peddling at speed you can hear the ticking

halfords have said they will do it for a tenner

i know it is prob such a simple job for you guys that tinker a lot but i am one of those people that turns a two min job into a two hundred pound repair job i will thread or strip something 100%

If it is happening when you are free wheeling, look elsewhere for the issue IME!

I suggest you learn some basic mechanical skills, else you will spend loads on simple jobs over the years! I would imagine you will at least double the cost of maintaining a bike by always turning to a shop!

Also, I would not let Halfords shop monkeys anywhere near a bike of mine! O.o

Sage advice. Remember that CC and YouTube are your friends in all matters of fettling.

HUGE +1. Don't do it, there must be an LBS option you can use.

Alci4, it's a proper simple job if you want to grease it yourself, just need an Allen key, save the 20 spent getting it done and buy yourself a torque wrench and some Teflon grease and do a proper job!

I sympathise though, I had to do this to my 'dale after taking her on tour through a minging day long down pour, a month after getting her. My hands were shaking as I did it, but it turned out fine.

Pm me if you want any help (moral support through the fear) if you DIY it.

Ps, get ur self one of those rubber headed camping mallets and use that to tap the crankset out of the bottom bracket rather than pull it out and get the big ring teeth stuck in your hand like I did xx(

Actually, thinking about it, my 'dale had a similar tick tick tick when I first got it.

Cue four days of panic.

Mine came from sunset cycles too...

Turned out it was just the cable end on the front derraleur catching on my foot as I peddled. :shy:

+1 for check out the other likely candidates first as above.
