BB30 clunks when pedalling backwards?

I have a boardman team carbon with FSA BB30 chainset, it recently had its first free service at Halfords after covering about 300 miles or so. Today I noticed a clunking creaking type sound which I think is coming from the BB chainset area but only when I turn the cranks backwards. I'm pretty sure it didn't do this before.

I noticed it when I was fitting a new saddle ( I couldn't get on with teh Fizik one supplied with the bike)and was checking the front to back alignment with the centre of the BB so was turning the cranks slowly to be able to measure it, after a brief movement I head this clunk. It happens randomly throughout the revloution of the crank but only backwards not when pedalling forwards, I removed my pedals to se if it was those, it wasn't.

Any ideas on things to check before I take it back to Halfords for them to have a look?

Thanks

If it has only done 300 miles then it is a warranty job. Boardman bikes have some great reviews behind them, but the main problem I have seen reported has been lack of grease on BB30s. Lots of reports of them having to be replaced under warranty. I wouldn't even think of doing it myself this early in its life!

That's what I was thinking but I wanted to check if there was anything else that could have caused a similar issue that I could check first, I'll be down to Halfords with it ASAP then.

Thanks

I'd take it back and get it checked out. Better safe than sorry.
Its probably the BB.
Seems to be the weak point on Boardman bikes.
I hope the problem is solved quickly.

+1 for warranty though. PS: it won't have had a 'free service' no matter what they call it, it will have had a quick visual check, a check of the cables, maybe a squirt of, (possibly) inappropriate lube and if you're lucky a wipe down.

If your not confident doing your own fettling I'd find a local LBS and develop a relationship with them and never darken Halfords door again.

I was getting a clunking noise on my bike and thought it was the bottom bracket. went to the LBS he took one look and said "It's the pedals", he changed them there and then and on my way I went.

Oops, just seen you took the pedals off to prove it wasn't them.

Don't know why everyone hates on BB30 all my bikes run this and it seems ok, I have no problem with it. You get a lighter and stiffer BB than with old designs with a reduced Q factor which can't be bad.

Checked it with chain of and it still clicks, went to see the Halfrods store I bought it from and they said that Boardman had recalled some models as there was insufficient grease in the BB and they'd check it out and if anything needed replacing they'd do it. I will drop it off tomorrow.

I do my own maintenance usually but this bike was bought as settlement of an insurance claim when I got wiped by a car driver and the insurance company would only go "like for like" on spec' not the bike, I had a bianchi that I had upgraded a lot of components on and this was the easiest option. So as the bike came with a "free first service" I used it, I knew it was only going to be a tighten the cables job to get the gears indexing properly again after the initial bedding in period, so I'm not relying on them for long term maintenance.

Incidentally what is FTFY?

Halfords don't inspire confidence. I dropped the bike in this morning and was told they don't have any replacement bearings, the last time they did one of these thay had to order the bearings and it took 3 months! They said they will let me know when they have a delivery date on the bearings.

From what I can see from the FSA website its simply a pair of sealed bearing races, which I assume should be readily available from your standard bearing stockist as I can't imagine FSA, Cannondale etc would have gone to the trouble of designing and making their own unique bearings.

I bloody hope its not 3 weeks!
