It very much seemed that the club ride a couple of weeks ago that was a deluge for 100 miles has destroyed my bike

Not only have I now replaced the headset that was oozing funny gunk everywhere AND not only is my lovely white bartape not really very white anymore, but afterwards I was getting a horrible creaking whenever I pedalled firmly, particularly on the right hand side.

I put up with it for a couple of days, then I bought a bottom bracket spanner as I thought I might need to investigate. I haven't had chance yet though, as I still haven't bought a crank removal device (a minor oversight).

Before I set off yesterday I thought that I better squirt a bit of GT85 round just to see if it would help and... as if by magic... come yesterday afternoon, she was as quiet as a mouse.

So...

Was that all that was required? A bit of gentle lubrication?

Or...

Is that just a temporary quick fix that will only last for a few days before it goes back to how it was? I.e. do I need to take the BB out and grease her up like a cheap Peruvian hooker?

Or...

Am I even looking at a new BB?

Any advice gratefully received.

Pedal/cleat interfaces can often squeek. GT85 may have helped - see how it goes on.

Thanks Fossy. I originally ruled that out as it occurred with two different pairs of shoes.
As long as I'm not causing any lasting damage by not taking further action.

funny you should say that, my bb also started creaking last weekend, this weekend, it's silent!
Unfortunately mine came back again last commute... I loosened and removed the non drive side crank with the intention of taking out the bb to see if it needed greasing, but despite YouTube telling me that the drive side should just slip out, I couldn't budge it for the life of me.

my BB started creaking a couple of years ago, so i bought a new BB... I still haven't put it on yet because removing the cranks, cleaning and greasing the splines always seems to sort it.

If you are talking about the drive-side crank/spindle have you tried putting a block of wood on the end of the spindle at the non-drive side and give it a tap with a mallet?

GXP bb? Commiserations... :headshake:

Not tried anything more forceful than a wiggle and a few yanks, but I think I will try a gentle mallet before seeking lbs advice. Thanks.

Re: the gxp bb, clearly some have had issues. Although it's not something I've seen a lot of press about... I've done quite a lot of miles on this one to be fair (3,000-ish) so if it did need replacing it's at the stage where I wouldn't feel too shortchanged.

A small amount of grease coming out of the headset is entirely normal but if it was everywhere you may have a point. Your supposed creaking BB may have been your pedal not tightened fully in the crank. I know its stopped but just give it another quick 'tighten' and then monitor.
