Hi guys,

My bb has been creaking for a bit so I stripped everything down when I was cleaning the chain today to grease up the spindles. Anyway it sounds and feels like the bearings are made of gravel and cheese. This means the whole thing is fcuck'ed right ?

I'm thinking to pick up a bb tool, new bb and getting down to it, does a screwed bb mean I need to find a bike shop and get it faced ect?

I'm thinking to pick up some cone Spanners and a cassette Rolland strip them down for a service too as the bike is a year old and hasn't had them done yet at all and my maintenance book says 4 months for road hubs.....

Not normally necessary to get the BB shell faced IME.

It can be difficult to get the old BB out, especially if it wasn't greased / coppa-slipped when it was put in, but apart from that it's normally a straight-forward job.

If it (as is probable) has "English" bottom bracket threading, the left hand side will be right hand (normal) thread and the right hand cup will be LEFT hand thread.

Undo the left cup first.

To hold the BB tool in place, I use a crank bolt a big washer. This stops it slipping off at the wrong moment and your knuckles hitting the deck.

That's ^ a top tip!

If it doesn't shift fairly easily (using the above method and a big adjustable spanner or pair of stilsons on the removal tool) leave it to soak in penetrating oil overnight before trying again. It's not difficult to knacker the notches in the BB cups, especially on cheaper BBs, making it a lot more difficult to remove them.

You will also need a crank puller to get the cranks off first! Make sure you get the right one for your BB as there are different ones for square taper and Octalink/ISIS.
