Best to remove cranks and check if the bearings are rough/dry etc direct

Once the cranks were off it was a bit rough. Treated it to Hope replacement in the hope not to revisit.

Loch side.
Is this BB shot? It or something is making a terrible noise when under load (what load I can give it!) should it spin more freely? I can't feel any movement in it.

The way to check a BB is to not remove the crank. Just remove the chain. Put the bike in a stand and place your ear on the top tube whilst spinning the crank. A worn BB will make a RRRRRRR noise for RRRReplace me. A good BB will make a Shhhhhhhht noise, for Shhhhht, leave me along. This advice comes with a caveat. Make sure your chin is out of reach of the crank when placing your ear against the frame. High speed pedal doesn't taste nice.
