Bottom bracket appears to be making a noise. I can't say 100% its there as I can't recreate it when off the bike, but predominantly the left hand crank causes a creak when moving through the forward quarter of a rev.
There's no discernable movement/side play etc. No discernable change in ride quality, just this occasionally annoying creak.
However it's there, so I thought I'd ask the question. Out of the choices of BB cartridge, spd pedal, spd shoe, my knee....I take it the most likely culprit is the BB cartridge?
As its just a creak at present am I better off saying "go for it" and getting it changed or thinking "it ain't yet broke, don't fix it"?

If its the BB it may just need re greasing or the bearings are rusty and need replacing. Give the bike a MOT

If it's a sealed cartridge then you just have to buy a new one, if it's the old adjustable ball race type then a clean and regrease may do the job. Still that's new technology for you.

before you buy a new cartridge, remove the cranks, grease and replace them. If that doesn't work, give the pedal bearings a service. if it still creaks, it's definitely the BB.

I'm saying this because last year i thought i needed a new BB, as it's been on for 8-10 years, but it turned out to be the cranks being dry and slightly loose. This year i figured the BB was finally going.. but it turned out to be the pedal bearings.

do it yourself....save yourself the monies and learn how to do it
you might get enjoyment from it and dont have to wait for the lbs to get bk to u and tell you theyve changed your pads too so cough up

As long as I breathe, I attack.
check tightness of the crank bolts, i had the same problem after installing a new BB and the left hand crank bolt took a few days of bedding in and being retightened atfer a ride.

Sleeping.....

Apparently I'm a terrible cyclists and fairly crappy human being. I got halfway down the road and decided it looked like rain, was windy and my hands were cold already so came home :s

Putting dinner in the oven then going down to the workshop to properly service the bike  might as well clean the chainrings if I have the crank off too, they seem to turn black wherever the rag doesn't reach
