BB ball bearings?

Sorry guys, but another newbie question!

I stripped the bottom bracket on my '80's Peugeot tonight, only to find that the bearing cups are OK after years of abuse, but one ball bearing on the crank side is badly scored. They are held in a thin sheet metal cage, but can be popped out for inspection. The crank arms are Nervar and the axle appears to be Stronglight (well, the plastic dust cover is, - maybe they fitted whatever was laying around the factory at the time!).

Does anyone have a good source of replacement ball bearings please? Their OD is 6.34mm, which is close to 1/4", but no cigar (0.1mm smaller).

Many thanks!

There are loads of them for sale on eBay, with or without the cages, but really you'd be best to try your local bike shop if you can.

They probably are 1/4" only worn a bit over the past 20-30 years. It's best to bin the retaining cage and fit a few extra loose balls. Most BBs take 11 on each side. Plenty of thick grease to hold them in place while you re-assemble. You can't use too much grease!

I use Simply Bearings if I want better quality than the LBS. (Grade 1 is best quality but v expensive - Grade 10 is what Campagnolo etc use on their top groupset items).

Wow...thanks guys! Cages removed and 11 1/4" balls per side - fitted a treat. Runs lovely! :-)
