A year past December I bought a Dawes Red Feather in an effort to get the fat off me! I go out twice a day doing 13miles in total and have lost over three stone in the process while still eating the same amount of food and chocolate and biscuits etc. While I was in Amsterdam I saw a Batavus bike and was completely taken with it, but as they are about £600-£750 in this country I was wondering if anyone can recommend them and are they as good as they look? Thank you in advance for any replies.

Depends which bike you mean. Batavus make a complete range from sit up and beg to all-out racers. You can see them at www.batavus.nl, unfortunately only in Dutch as far as I can see. I've got a Comanche (now no longer in production). It's a strong, slightly sluggish, all-round machine that I've used practically every day for the past 15 years or so, from shopping and day trips to alpine passes and month-long tours. No real problems, repairs or concerns.

As far as I know, Batavus is a good brand - but then the Dutch know how to build a decent useful bike.

Having looked at the website, I'm rather taken with the lady's double breasted raincoat! And I'm not normally into clothes much...

(Not that I speak Dutch, but if you can read past the spelling, a lot of words sound just like what they are in English...) That, and babelfish is useful...

Batavus are a good make

My first moped was a Batavus

But back on topic.

The problem withthese bikes is thatthey are quality, heavy, and reliable machines and you pay for this. Most Dutchbikes are in this price range.

If it is the "traditional style" you like then Pashley are a little cheaper, but still high quality.

I have a Batavus Alamo - 24 gear tourer. There is the possibility of adjusting the handlebars to a huge variety of positions without an alleyn key. It handles well when loaded. It is absolutely excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. I use it for shopping, commuting and recreational touring. It performs well on hills and is very speedy on the flat. It is a high quality, low maintenance and reliable machine. The Dutch bike shop in Littlehampton gives excellent service.
