As someone who tends to warm up pretty quickly when riding, rather than go for a jacket that I can't pack down into a jersey pocket or saddle bag, this winter I'm planning to think a bit more about some sensible layering.

To that end, I'm shopping around for some base layers. Both the HH 'StayDry' Strip Crew long sleeve base and the DHB Merino base layer 150 have caught my eye in terms of looking pretty good value.

I have really positive experiences from using HH tops for my running, but everyone seems to rave about Merino as the ideal base material for cycling. Any views/experience from these tops or do I need to splash some more money?

If you are looking at merino it's hard to beat Icebreaker for fit and holding shape after a lot of washes. I've found other makes tend to be more general purpose and baggy - not great for cycling.

Some decent prices here http://www.natureshop.co.uk/icebreaker/mens-base-layer.

I'm pretty new - so don't have much to compare, but last winter I got a twin pack of HH lifa dry for £30. (long top and long bottoms) They were a bit of a revelation to me, and I used them in sub-zero temperatures to good effect.

They'll be back on this winter again.

The good thing about Merino (apart from those mentioned) is it doesn't smell!
I've got several base layers, 2 of which keep me warm, wick sweat away, but leave me with an odd odour! And when i've gone to put them bcak on, for my ride home they really are a bit fragrant! My merino one wins hands down on the smelloscale

Lots of Merino base-layers to choose from at Planet X, including some at silly low prices like this - long sleeve merino for £19.99.
