I've just bought Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance, and in the brake section, he says the cable hangers for both brakes should include barrel adjusters. I know the rear one (that came with the bike) doesn't include a barrel adjuster, and there's nothing in the description to say the front one that I have on order includes one.

I've looked in a number of online shops and googled it, and I'm not at all clear on what I need. (All the barrel adjusters I've seen seem to be either for gears, or designed to replace existing ones on brake levers.) Can anyone point me towards the type of barrel adjusters I need, and where I can order them?

This?

ps if you find it stiff to turn the knob turn it with one hand while squeezing the brake calipers together with the other.

My barrel adjusters are made from derailleur adjuster screws and the knurled knob from a Presta valve, both for front and rear brakes on my Raleigh Royal (earlier handmade type). No need to buy fancy speciality products! The derailleur adjusters come from defunct units.
