I´m still agonising over which road bike to go for and have a short list that has turned into a long list.
I´ve also just discovered that you can buy direct from the US with big discounts (and it looked like free postage to the UK??), for example:

A monocoque carbon fibre framed Motobecane ´Immortal Pro´ 2010 for £826 (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/immortalpro_09.htm) with 105/Ultegra gears

or a 20 Speed Titanium Motobecane 2011 (SRAM Rival) for £1016 (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/lechamp_ti_heat_rival.htm)

Their sale page is here:

I like the idea of getting measured up and having a trial run out so I think Condor is my next port of call (especially as I work 200 yards from their showroom). But the above offers are scary.

Just wanted to say anything imported from the US will incur hefty VAT/import charges.  Sometimes things slip through customs but you can be sure a big item like a bike will not. Check into it before buying anything -  I have imported a lot of guitars from the US and the charges usually add at least an extra 20+% to the cost.

Yes, I meant to add that in my original post. I´ve had the same happening with CDs.
