hey CC'ers!

got a bit of a problem - i'm probably being a proper div but i just can't seem to do what it says in the title - bar ends don't seem to fit the bars of my bike

the grips that come as standard (pic doesn't really show it, sorry) are molded 'lock on' grips and as such the ends of the grips have a shaped plastic molding that the grip 'cap end' fits on and i can't get the bar ends over?

i've bought some different grips (Giant branded) that are not shaped in any way - these still have a molding at the end which means the diameter of the bar end isn't big enough to fit over and clamp down.

am i simply going to have to cut in to the grip end to shorten then and get the bar ends on that way - which would leave me with an 'open end' to my handlebars and look rubbish or is it that i've got the wrong kit/the bike isn't designed to allow bar ends/i'm being a complete spanner?

any help here is most appreciated peeps

On my Trek Hybrid I cut a hole in the end of the rubber grip then slid it an inch further onto the bar.(had to loosen the brake/gear control and move that up as well).

The bar ends need to go directly on the metal bar. It will leave open ends .You can buy bar end plugs if you want them.
Plugging the holes is a bit of a safety thing not just for looks. In a crash the bare open end wouldnt be good to fall on.

many many thanks banjo, i thought that might be the case (bar ends on bare handlebar) so i shall do some jiggery pokery with the gear control/brake levers and fit them as you suggest - good to get some reassurance

I was reluctant to fit them as like you I wasnt keen on cutting the hole in the end of the grip, wish I had done it ages ago now. They give you an alternative hand position which helps stop the numb fingers thing on a long ride. Also on steep hills it makes it easier to move your weight forward and keep the front wheel from lifting.

As you can see I havent fitted any end plugs yet.

aha! thanks for the pics as well banjo  the new grips i bought won't actually require me to cut them, they're open both ends so it seems i'll just need to move the brake levers down the bars and the gear control on the right side - i was somehow expecting to simply not have to do anything to put the bar ends on and then got a bit muddled and concerned about it.

i don't like having to take things off/move things around on my baby, i'm still very precious about it - i may have even cleaned parts of it with a toothbrush a few weeks ago

you've been a great help
